Last Thursday, the Politburo announced the launch of a “Party-wide thematic education campaign to study and implement Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era” (oui). This announcement is followed by a session Politburo study on the subject. Finally, Monday, the party center has summoned a working conference on Monday to kick off the campaign. Cai Qi, key man in the Xi apparatus takes the helm of the core campaign leadership group.

The goal of this campaign is not just to strengthen Xi's power again and again., already installed. Instead, this political campaign should be understood as an exercise in bringing Party cadres up to speed on “Xi Jinping Thought”, which will likely be elevated to “thought” (Thought – be on the same level as Mao's thought) during this term. For information, the working rules of the State Council have been “simplified”, removing the theoretical contributions of Xi's predecessors. Monday, CCTV was promoting two books titled “selected excerpts from Xi Jinping's speeches”.

You will tell me, why should these ideological rantings interest us ? Beyond the obvious strengthening of Xi Jinping's central and preeminent political position, the content of this “Thought of Xi” constitutes as many political lines inscribed in stone which apply to the whole Party, including for future leaders So, the official political line becomes that of the “struggle” and Chinese-style modernization to make China the world power it deserves. In a word, Xi's thought not only cements the leader's position in the Party but also China's political direction for decades to come.
