Unavoidable product both for breeding purposes and for consumption, soy is a key food in the global and especially Chinese agricultural system. But over the past thirty years, population growth, improving the quality of life of the Chinese, openness to international trade and the country's insufficient arable land have led Beijing to continually increase its soybean imports, thus weakening its national industry.
